- Maintenance | Gizmo Mods
Regular Race Bike Maintenance Daily After Riding Maintenance: Visually inspect race bike completely for obvious broken or worn parts. Prepare to wash, covering air filter or removing air filter completely and covering i ntake boot with appropriate cover to prevent water and debris from entering carburetor intake. Plug exhaust pipe to prevent water from entering exhaust system and soaking into silencer packing. Wash using non-caustic cleaning solution being careful not to spray high pressure directly on seals and bearings. Careful not to spray directly into carb vents, transm ission vents and cable entry. Once clean, wipe or blow dry. Re-install new or cleaned air filter. Do not run engine without an air filter ever! Apply a thin film of grease around the sealing edge of the filter where it mates to the air box. Once installed, feel around the entire sealing edge to assure air filter is properly seated. While engine is cool, check coolant level. Make sure radiator cap is re-installed completely. Remove the exhaust plug and start engine. Run for a couple minutes to assure no r esidual water migrated into the engine, exhaust or carburetor. r While engine is warm, drain the transmission/engine oil and replace with new oil. T o rque drain plugs to OEM spec. Take a moment to look at the oil for contaminants and or burnt clutch smell. Remove the oil fill plug until new oil is installed just as a reminder there is no oil in the engine. Remove ignition cover (2 strokes only) and blow out with air all debris, sand or water. Most 2 strokes ignition covers are not waterproof or dust-proof. Clean the stator cover i tself re-install and torque cover to OEM spec. Do not spray any inhibitors on ignition rotor or coils. Lube and adjust chain, careful not to overtighten. Lube the inside and outside of the chain. Never spin the wheel backwards. Inspect chain and sprockets for wear Never replace a chain or sprockets separately. Change as a set. Inspect front and rear chain guides and buffers for wear. Replace as needed. Inspect spokes in both front and rear wheels for proper tightness. Do not over tighten. Inspect air pressure in front and rear tires. If you have air forks, verify air pressure when suspen sion is cold. Adjust to rider preference. Inspect front and rear brake pads and overall brake operation. Inspect all engine and chassis bolts and fasteners to proper OEM torque specs. Refuel as needed . H ourly During Riding Maintenance: Refuel as needed. Inspect air filter, replace before filter is completely coated with sand/dirt. Re-install new or cleaned air filter. Do not run engine without an air filter ever! Apply a thin film of grease around the sealing edge of the filter where it mates to the air box. Once installed, feel around the entire sealing edge to assure air filter is properly seated. Lube and adjust chain, careful not to over-tighten. Lube the inside and outside of the chain. Never spin the wheel backwards. Inspect chain and sprockets for wear. Never replace a chain or sprockets separately. Change as a set. Change transmission / engine oil every 1 to 2 hours of riding. Inspect front and rear Brake pads. Inspect front fork seals for leaking. Inspect rear shock seals and spring retainer nut. Inspect front and rear tire pressure. Inspect front and rear wheel spokes. Inspect all engine and chassis bolts and fasteners to proper OEM torque specs. Weekly Maintenance: Remove all plastic and body work. Inspect body pieces and chassis for broke or excessively worn items. Clean and reinstall or replace as needed. Remove front and rear wheels. Inspect axles and bearings for rust or excessive wear clean, lubricate and reinstall or replace as needed. Remove chain adjuster bolts completely from swing arm, lubricate with assembly lube and re-install. Remove front and rear brake master cylinder covers and inspect brake fluid. If brown, cloudy or discolored, flush out old fluid and replace with new. Remove Clutch Master Cylinder cover and inspect brake fluid. If brown, cloudy or discolored, flush out old fluid and replace with new. Inspect clutch system including clutch plates, spring height, outer basket, inner hub, and pressure plate for excessive wear and replace as needed. Look for bluing of metal plates or grooving of fiber plates, grooving of clutch basket fingers and/or wear lips on the pressure plate and inner hub. Inspect shock spring sag and ride height. Adjust as needed and set to rider preference. Inspect all engine and chassis bolts and fasteners to proper OEM torque specs. Perform compression check and log against new. 80% of new = rebuild. Inspect throttle cable for fraying. Do not reassemble with grease. Use dry-lube. Monthly Maintenance (15-20 Hours); Disassemble front steering stem and inspect for excessive wear, rusting or pitting in the bearings and races. Replace as needed. Lubricate and torque to OEM spec. Do NOT over grease the steering bearings. Disassemble swing arm and inspect swing arm bolt, bearings and spacer bushings for excessive wear, rusting or pitting. Replace as needed. Lubricate and torque to OEM spec. Disassemble shock linkage and inspect for excessive wear, rusting or pitting in bearings and spacer bushings. Replace as needed. Lubricate and torque to OEM spec. Remove shock assembly. Inspect for body damage. Inspect upper and lower bushings for excessive wear and replace as needed. Lube and torque to OEM Spec. Replace exhaust pipe header O-rings.
